Library acquires the papers of artist
and gay rights activist Harvey Fierstein

The Yale University Library recently received the papers of gay rights activist, Broadway actor, producer, writer and film star Harvey Fierstein -- thereby enhancing its efforts to collect primary source materials to document the culture and history of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders.

The papers, which arrived in December, will be housed in the Manuscripts & Archives Department of Sterling Memorial Library. All non-restricted materials will be open to researchers as soon as they are catalogued.

The papers presently consist of scripts from theatrical and television productions, photographs, publicity files, audio and video tapes, writings by and about Fierstein, correspondence, memorabilia, contracts and awards, circa 1970-2005. Other materials are expected at a later date.

Born in Brooklyn and educated at Pratt Institute, Fierstein was a founding actor of Gallery Pictures Community Theater, established in Brooklyn in 1965. His first stage appearance was in 1971 in Andy Warhol's "Pork" at La Mama's Experimental Theater Club. His first play, "International Stud," was produced in 1972.

Fierstein has appeared in over 35 plays, movies and television episodes, including "La Cage aux Folles," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Torch Song Trilogy" and "Cheers." His distinctive voice was used in "The Simpsons" (as Homer's executive secretary) and in "Legends of Mulan" (as Yao). He adapted the story of "The Ugly Duckling" into an HBO film titled "The Sissy Duckling" and voiced the lead role, earning a Humanitas Award.

He has earned four Tony Awards -- two for his play "Torch Song Trilogy" (Best Play and Best Actor in a Play), one for his adaptation of "La Cage aux Folles" (Best Book of a Musical), in which he starred, and one for his role in "Hairspray" (Best Actor in a Musical). He most recently appeared on Broadway in the role of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof."

Feinstein is also author of the plays "Safe Sex" and "Spookhouse." He has lived in Connecticut for over 20 years.
