PIER seminar aims to link ancient and modern history of Iran A Saturday Seminar for Educators titled "Iran: Past and Present" will be presented on April 1 by Programs in International Educational Resources (PIER) and the Council on Middle East Studies, both part of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies. The seminar will include lectures, discussions, films and more designed to introduce educators to Persian and Iranian identity and society. By linking ancient and modern history, the event will aim to put in context the events in today's news. Featured speakers will include: * "From Persia to Iran: Making of a Modern Nation": an historical overview of the complex fabric of Persian and Iranian society over time, by Abbas Amanat, professor of history, Yale. * "Iran Under Ahmadinejad": a sampling of socio-political topics in modern-day Iran, by Mahmood Monshipouri, professor of political science, Quinnipiac University. * "What Do We Talk about When We Talk about the West?": an exploration of a range of Persian cultural and literary ideas and sources by Fereshteh Amanat Kowssar, lecturer of Persian language and literature, and Near Eastern languages and civilizations, Yale. * "Revolution and Cinema in Iran": a discussion of social history of the Iranian cinema by Mazyar Lotfalian, visiting lecturer in anthropology and a member of the Council on Middle East Studies, Yale. The day will include a continental breakfast and lunch. "Iran: Past and Present: will be held 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. The seminar is free, but registration is required. Up to .75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be awarded; a $5 contribution from those desiring CEUs is requested.
