Themis Kyriakides, assistant professor of pathology and biomedical engineering, has been selected as a member of the editorial board of the Institute of Physics' (IOP) newest journal, Biomedical Materials. The journal has been established to publish original research findings that contribute to knowledge about the composition, properties and performance of materials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The IOP is a not-for-profit learned society publisher that will provide access to the journal free of charge at www.iop.org throughout 2006. A member of the Interdepartmental Program in Vascular Biology and Transplantation, Kyriakides focus his research on cellular and molecular events at the interface between implanted biomaterials and tissues, wound healing and tissue regeneration with a focus on angiogenesis, and the development of artificial skin.
The provost has appointed a search committee to identify candidates for the position of director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS). The committee, composed of faculty and staff representatives, will review and make recommendations regarding candidates identified in the search process. Dr. Stephanie Spangler, deputy provost, will chair the committee. Rick Maffei, director of security operations at the School of Medicine and former director of the school's building services and operations, will serve as interim director of OEHS. Dr. Alexander Neumeister, associate professor of psychiatry, has been awarded the Max Hamilton Memorial Prize by the Collegium Internationale Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum. The prize is given to a young scientist in recognition of an outstanding contribution to psychopharmacology. Hamilton (1912-1988) is best known for his assessment of depressive illness through psychometrics. The recipient of the award is chosen by an international scientific jury. The prize consists of $10,000 and an engraved plaque.
