Dr. Edward Hume (far right), founder of the Yale-China Association's medical programs, takes the pulse of one of his early patients, a member of China's gentry in March of 1909.

Forging Mutual Understanding:
The Yale-China Association

For over a century, the Yale-China Association has worked to develop education in and about China and to further knowledge, understanding and friendship between Chinese and American people.

Founded in 1901, Yale-China is a private, non-profit organization. Annually, close to 1,000 Chinese and American teachers, scholars, public health professionals, lawyers, non-governmental organization leaders and students participate in Yale-China's educational programs in Anhui, Guangdong, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Xinjiang and Yunnan provinces, as well as in Beijing and Hong Kong.

Since 1909, Yale-China has awarded two-year fellowships to Yale graduates to teach English to Chinese students of all ages. It also facilitates a professional teacher exchange program between schools in Changsha and New Haven.

Yale-China's health program works closely with faculty from Yale's medical and nursing schools, placing special emphasis on the AIDS epidemic in China, infection control and community health initiatives. (See story.)

Through its legal education fellowship program, Yale-China sends American lawyers to teach law in Chinese universities, where they have also worked to develop clinical legal education programs and legal aid services.

In addition, Yale-China has fostered campus-based community service initiatives through undergraduate exchanges and developed scholarship programs at Chinese universities that include community service components. Each year, its summer service program places up to 18 Yale students as interns with Chinese non-governmental organizations, where they have been engaged in fields including non-profit management, drug rehabilitation, youth services, HIV/AIDS education and care, and public policy.

Yale-China organizes numerous cultural exchange programs, most notably the annual Yale-New Asia exchange, which brings together eight Yale students and eight Chinese University of Hong Kong students to examine topics relevant to Hong Kong and U.S. societies.
