Her Excellency Shaikha Lubna bint Khaled Al Qasimi, the minister of economy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a member of the royal family, visited Yale on April 11. Recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the women to watch in the Middle East, Al Qasimi was the first woman in the UAE to assume a full cabinet position. She is the UAE's lead negotiator for a free trade agreement with the United States. In meetings with President Richard C. Levin, Vice President Linda Koch Lorimer, Director of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization Ernesto Zedillo and faculty, Al Qasimi discussed the importance of working together to promote mutual understanding between the United States and the Gulf. The minister, who is a graduate of a U.S. university, also suggested ways that Yale can be more engaged in the UAE, a key strategic and longstanding U.S. ally in the region. The minister also met with students who are studying Arabic and the Middle East, including three who represented Yale at the "Women as Global Leaders Conference" hosted by Zayed University in March and a student who interned in the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi in 2004. The minister's visit to Yale was at the invitation of Lorimer following a meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January. Yale's ties in the Middle East have grown: Lorimer delivered two addresses in the UAE in December 2005, including one at the graduation ceremony for participants in the Executive Management Certificate Program, a collaboration of the Yale School of Management, Zayed University and the UAE Ministry of Finance and Industry. The Yale World Fellows traveled to the Middle East last December and held outreach events in Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and Qatar.
