The Yale Visitor Center is now offering two new ways to explore the campus -- foreign-language tours led by undergraduate International Ambassadors and downloadable self-guided audio tours.
International Ambassadors
The Visitor Center annually welcomes over 55,000 individuals to the campus, and more and more of these individuals are from outside the United States, says Sheila Pastor, the center's director, noting that this influx of foreign nationals is a reflection of Yale's increased international focus.
The new International Ambassadors Program was launched in February in response to requests from Yale departments needing foreign language speakers to provide campus tours.
In the fall, the Visitor Center began recruiting undergraduates who were fluent in a foreign language (many because they are native speakers) for training as International Ambassadors. Like all of the center's other tour guides, this meant that they also had to become "fluent" in Yale's history, architecture and vast resources.
Today, there are 10 International Ambassadors who are available to give tours in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, Japanese, Spanish, French and Italian. The student tour guides are Ji-yeon Kim '07, Fiona Littlejohn-Carrillo '09, Duncan Cheung '07, Jee Hye Kim '07, Wendy He '07, Jeongseok Yu '06, Angel Ku '08, Tiffany Lu '06, Christopher So Gibson '09 and Kim Won '06.
The center hopes to offer tours in even more languages in the future.
Campus departments and organizations interested in arranging for a tour led by an International Ambassador should contact the Yale Visitor Center at (203) 432-2300. There is a $40 fee. All tours leave from the center, located at 149 Elm St.
Downloadable Audio Tours
For the more technologically minded, the Visitor Center is also offering a self-guided audio walking tour of the Yale campus available in an MP3 format that can be downloaded from its home page.
While listening on their MP3 players, visitors will be guided from their starting point at the Visitor Center to other campus attractions. To allow visitors to tour at their own convenience, the tour has been subdivided into separate tracks corresponding to each stop on the tour. The center also offers a map highlighting each of the stops, along with corresponding track numbers.
The audio portion of the tour is about 40 minutes long; adding in walking time, the tour takes about an hour and a half.
Currently, the MP3 tours are only available in English, but the center expects to offer tours in Chinese and Spanish in the near future.
To download the tour, visit www.yale.edu/visitor and follow the instructions.
The Visitor Center continues to offer free student-led tours of the campus at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday-Friday and at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The center, which also provides maps and other information about the University, is open 9 a.m.-4:45 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends. It is closed only on Thanksgiving Day and the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
