Chinese President Hu Jintao's decision to make Yale the site of his only academic address during his first state visit to the United States reflects his nation's long association with the University.
There are over 80 Yale-China academic collaborations currently underway and more than 26 study sites across the Chinese Republic. More Yale faculty conduct academic projects in China than in any other country, and Yale hosts more students and scholars from China than from any other foreign nation.
While Yale's ties to China date back more than 170 years, the University's leaders --President Richard C. Levin, in particular -- have been working to make this relationship stronger than ever.
"The new openness of the Chinese economy and the large investment by the Chinese government in its system of higher education is both remarkable and inspiring, and it has created an important opportunity for Yale to deepen our connection to China," said Levin, who has visited China five times in the last five years.
Today, this connection includes joint efforts in important subjects ranging from genetics and health policy to legal reform and urban development.
"Our relationship with China exemplifies one of the key tenets of our globalization effort -- attract more diverse students to Yale and get more of our students overseas," said Levin. "Because by encouraging independence and freedom in our students, we help defend independence and freedom for all."
In this issue are highlighted just some of the many Yale-China collaborations underway.
