Promoting Health in China

Yale researchers are working with colleagues in China on numerous initiatives designed to improve both the health of the Chinese people and the training of health care workers. The following represent just a few of those programs.

HIV/AIDS Research. China is currently experiencing one of the most rapidly expanding HIV epidemics in the world. Since 1998, the number of reported cases has increased by about 30% yearly. It is estimated that by 2010, China could have as many as 10 million infections and 260,000 orphans if effective interventions are not implemented. Yale's Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS -- directed by public health specialist Professor Michael Merson of Yale -- is engaged in interdisciplinary research focused on the prevention of HIV infection and the reduction of negative consequences of HIV disease in vulnerable and underserved populations in China and throughout the world. Currently, faculty in public health, nursing and medicine are conducting research in three regions of China to develop AIDS prevention training, to facilitate the education and training of health care workers about AIDS, and to encourage the use of preventative measures by sex workers, drug abusers and other high-risk populations.

Training Nurses. In a program, directed by Professor Ann Williams of Yale, School of Nursing faculty and students are working with the National Nursing Center of China and Xiangya School of Medicine to provide HIV/AIDS training to Chinese nurses and other health care professionals. This is an ongoing program sponsored by the Yale-China Association. In addition, through the Chia Family Public Health Fellowships, two or three young Chinese women each year study at Yale for a semester and devise a public health project under the guidance of Yale faculty.

Improving Rural Health. Yale public health researcher Dr. Hong Wang is working with colleagues from Harvard to develop a community-based health insurance project called Rural Mutual Health Care. The project, based in three townships covering a rural population of 60,000, seeks to demonstrate that Chinese farmers could get better basic health services with appropriate health reform strategies and that illnesses caused by poverty could be alleviated by these appproaches.

Smoking Cessation. Yale is working with the Chinese Ministry of Health to examine the impact of both smoking and quitting smoking on worker productivity. In addition, the study -- also led by Dr. Hong Wang -- is exploring factors that influence people's smoking and quitting behavior.
