Ceremony formally marks Rose Center opening

The Rose Center, which houses both the Yale University Police Department and a community center for the Dixwell neighborhood, was formally dedicated on May 30.

Speaking at the ceremony were President Richard C. Levin, Vice President Linda Koch Lorimer, New Haven Alderman Drew King, Yale Police Chief James Perrotti, New Haven Police Chief Francisco Ortiz and Deborah Rose '72 B.A., '77 M.P.H., '89 Ph.D., for whom the facility is named.

Located at 101 Ashmun St., the Rose Center is a 34,000-square-foot structure built on a two-acre lot. In addition to providing headquarters for Yale's 80-member police force, it houses the Dixwell-Yale University Community Learning Center, which features a computer-learning facility and space for public meetings and children's programs.

In developing the center, Yale officials met with neighbors in the Dixwell area, who welcomed the construction of the new building at the site of what had once been an abandoned industrial laundry facility. Yale purchased the property at the community's request and had environmental remediation done. Rose, the Yale alumna and cornerstone donor for whom the center is named, is a Washington, D.C.-area scientist. She has been a longtime supporter of Yale's initiatives to revitalize the City of New Haven, having worked with community outreach programs since her earliest days at the University.

Yale worked with Dixwell neighborhood residents in the creation of the Rose Center, which -- in addition to facilities for Yale Police -- includes a computer literacy center and public meeting spaces.

Informally open for the past few months, the Dixwell-Yale University Community Learning Center has already logged 1,174 computer users, including 50 who attended adult computer literacy classes. Other adult programs have included a workshop for first-time homebuyers, website seminars, literacy tutoring and an income tax assistance program that had 72 participants.

Youth programs have drawn more than 260 participants to a wide range of activities, including homework/tutoring sessions, a PowerPoint training class, and workshops involving shadow puppetry, hands-on science, poetry, acting, financial literacy, music and art. Board games, movie nights and athletics are among other popular programs at the center.

Numerous community groups have held their meetings in the Rose Center. These include Dixwell area block watch groups, the City of New Haven, the New Haven Fire Department, Empower New Haven, the Department of Children and Families, the New Haven Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc., the Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the New Haven Chapter of Jack and Jill of America Inc., and several local homeowners' associations.
