Drama production will highlight
work by New Haven students

The dramatic visions of local youths will take shape on stage in June as part of the annual Dwight-Edgewood Project (DEP) sponsored by the Yale Repertory Theatre and the School of Drama.

Now in its 11th year, DEP is modeled after the 52nd Street Project's "Playmaking" course. Twelve local middle school students are paired with School of Drama mentors and spend the month of June learning about theater and writing original plays.

As the culmination of the program, original 10-minute plays -- written by the youngsters and designed, produced and performed by Yale drama students -- will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, at the Off-Broadway Theatre, located at 41 Broadway. Admission is free, and the public is invited. Seating is available on a first-come basis.

The 12 students taking part in DEP 2006 are from Troup Magnet Academy Middle School. They were chosen by the school's principal, Richard Kaliszewski, based on their demonstrated writing skills. This year's participants are Takeishia Crenshaw, grade 7; Lamar Folnson, grade 6; Jebrell Hooks, grade 8; Amanda John, grade 7; Oludare Joseph, grade 8; Olugbenga Joseph, grade 6; Nyah Macklin, grade 6; Tau Macklin, grade 7; Niajah Manley, grade 8; Lisnette Rodriguez, grade 8; Cerise Wiley, grade 7; Inasia Woods, grade 7. Four of the youngsters -- Jebrell Hooks, Olugbenga Joseph, Nyah Macklin and Niajah Manley -- are returning to DEP for their second season.

The staff of DEP 2006 includes Jeff Rogers, managing director; Stephanie Ybarra, program director; Snehal Desai, director; Michael Walkup, director; Zane Pihlstrom and Brenda Davis, set/costume designers. Mentors include Monica Achen, Nastaran Ahmadi, Amy Boratko, Michael Braun, Brian Burns, Erin Felgar, Jason Fitzgerald, Dorothy Fortenberry, Joseph Parks, Gamal Palmer, Bryce Pinkham and Jamel Rodriguez.

Michael Bernard, former artistic associate director of the 52nd Street Project, will teach the DEP "Playmaking" course.
