Sindelar named ASHE president

Jody L. Sindelar, a professor and health economist in the School of Medicine's Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, has been named the inaugural president-elect and current vice president of the newly formed American Society of Health Economists (ASHE).

A founding member of ASHE, Sindelar played a central role in planning the organization's inaugural biennial meeting, held June 4-7 in Madison, Wisconsin.

ASHE is a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the United States; it is an affiliate of the International Health Economics Associations. Titled "Economics of Populations Health," the ASHE meeting provided a forum for emerging ideas and empirical results of health economics research. Over 400 papers and posters were presented in multiple scientific and plenary sessions. Presenters discussed research findings on wide-ranging issues that are critical to the health of the public.

"Health economists provide insights that are important in developing solutions to current topics such as disparities in health and health care utilization, rising costs of health care, greater efficiency in the finance and delivery of health care, the health of the young and old, societal harms of addictions, spread of HIV/AIDS, and impacts of mental health problems," said Sindelar, who is also appointed at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale and the Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale. She is on the editorial board of Health Economics and has published in economics, health policy and medical journals. Her area of specialty is the economics of smoking, alcohol and illicit drugs.
