Pilot Pen Tennis tournament to debut
instant replay technology

Line balls and close calls will be a source of added excite>ment at this year's Pilot Pen Tennis tournament.

This year for the first time, instant replay technology -- along with a new player challenge system -- will be used during the competition, which will be held Aug. 18-26 in the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, located at 45 Yale Ave.

Once a player challenges a line call, an official replay will be provided simultaneously to the television networks covering the tournament and to the audience in the Yale stadium via video boards being installed there. This will allow players, officials and fans to witness the results of the player challenges as they unfold.

The Pilot Pen Tennis competition is one of 10 summer tournaments leading to the U.S. Open that will use Hawk-Eye Line Calling Technology and the new protocol for player challenges. The system was debuted at the Nasdaq-100 Open in March -- where, out of 161 challenges, 53 calls were reversed.

Sponsored by Michelob ULTRA, Pilot Pen Tennis is a U.S. Open Series event on the ATP Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. The competition is the first-ever combined men's and women's summer tournament leading into the U.S. Open.

The tournament features a $1,250,000 purse -- $600,000 for women and $650,000 for men. The event is televised by both CBS and ESPN2, with international coverage reaching more than 100 million potential viewers in over 50 countries. Attendance at the Yale stadium last year topped 100,000.

The 28 competitors on the women's side this year will include World No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, this year's Wimbledon champion, as well as defending champion Lindsay Davenport, and top-ranked players Elena Dementieva, Anastasia Myskina, Daniela Hantuchova, Elena Likhovtseva, Sania Mirza, Natalie Bechy and Jelena Jankovic. The 46 players competing on the men's side will include defending champion James Blake and top-ranked player Vince Spadea. Sixteen doubles teams will compete in both the men's and women's tournaments.

The qualifying rounds will be Aug. 18-19, with the main draw Aug. 20-26. Information on ticket prices is available at www.pilotpentennis.com or by calling (888) 99-PILOT or (203) 776-7331.

Students and employees from Yale and other area colleges with a valid I.D. will receive a 33% savings on up to four middle-tier tickets during Schick College Night on Wednesday, Aug. 23. There will be other specially priced tickets -- including $8 admission for youngsters during Comcast/ESPN Kids Day on Sunday, Aug. 20 -- and giveaways throughout the tournament. In conjunction with the competition, there will also be an evening of jazz and wine on Wednesday, Aug. 23; a lunch with celebrity chef Dave Lieberman on Thursday, Aug. 24; and a fashion show on Friday, Aug. 25. Information about these activities is also available at www.pilotpentennis.com.
