This New House
A future home-sweet-home for a New Haven family is taking shape this summer, thanks to the efforts of first-year students at the School of Architecture.
The three-bedroom house at 51 Henry St. in the Dixwell neighborhood was designed and is being built by architecture students as part of the First-Year Building Project, a program that gives them practical experience in construction and contracting. In fact, because the budget does not cover all the building costs, the students must work to get contributions from manufacturers, retailers and local service providers. This year, for instance, the students were given a grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund for photovoltaic panels, which will provide 50% of the house's energy needs from solar light.
Once finished, the house will be offered by Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven to a qualified buyer at cost.
