Chinese archivists to meet with Yale librarians

Thirty Chinese archivists will learn about the inner workings of the Yale Library when they visit the campus in August as guests of the Manuscripts and Archives department.

The delegates are coming to the United States to participate in the Joint Seminar on Archival Methods, a formal program established in 1999 between the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library and the State Archives Administration of China (SAAC). During the seminar and Yale visit, the young Chinese professionals will be introduced to the current practice and theory of archival administration in the United States.

The participants hail from throughout China and are selected by the SAAC based on their knowledge of archival administration in China and their ability to understand and speak English.

This year, the seminar will take place July 23-Aug. 15. The first portion of the program will be held at the Bentley Historical Library. The delegates will then attend the annual meeting of the Society of American Archivists in Washington, D.C. The program will continue at Yale Aug. 7-10.

The theme of the campus program will be "Yale and China." The delegates will be welcomed by University Secretary and Vice President Linda Lorimer, University Librarian Alice Prochaska and Richard Szary, the Carrie S. Beinecke Director of Manuscripts and Archives. The Chinese archivists will then attend sessions that will explore American archival practices by focusing on the preservation and documentation of American-Chinese interaction and history, primarily in Manuscripts and Archives, but also at the Divinity Library and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. In addition, Yale scholars Beatrice Bartlett, Janet Chen and Pierre F. Landry will given presentations about their research in Chinese history and culture.

The seminar will conclude with a visit to New York City by the delegates.
