Jealousy, magic and reunion are among the themes explored in the four one-act operas being presented by Yale Opera on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28 and 29.
Renowned director Marc Verzatt will lead the Yale Opera in the performances, which will feature works by Puccini and Ravel on Friday and operas by Debussy and Poulenc on Saturday. Yale Opera is under the artistic direction of Doris Yarick Cross.
Friday's program will feature Puccini's tragic love story "Tabarro" ("The Cloak"), about the jealousy of an older man towards his deceitful younger wife on a houseboat on the Seine, and Ravel's lyric fantasy, "L'Enfant et les Sortileges" ("The Child and the Spells"), about a wicked child who has an epiphany when the inanimate objects he abuses begin talking back.
Saturday's program includes Debussy's Prix de Rome winner "L'Enfant Prodigue" ("The Prodigal Son"), based on the New Testament parable of the Prodigal Son, and Poulenc's farcical opera, "Les Mamelles de Tiresias" ("The Breasts of Tiresias"), about role reversal and reunion.
Both evening's performances will be at 8 p.m. in Sprague Hall, corner of College and Wall streets. Tickets are $8 and $12; $5 for students. Supertitles for all scenes not sung in English will be projected on a screen overhanging the stage.
Verzatt has directed opera and theater productions throughout the country. Most recently he re-staged Yale Opera's production of Britten's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" as well as mounting Purcell's "The Fairy Queen" for performances with the Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi di Milano in Italy this past summer. Last year marked his first season as resident director of the New Opera Company of Brooklyn.
