Nobel laureate to give public lecture on campus

Former Israeli prime minister and Nobel laureate Shimon Peres will speak at Yale on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets.

The talk is free, and the public is welcome.

Peres will visit Yale on behalf of Caravan for Democracy, an initiative of Jewish National Fund and Media Watch International that encourages dialogue on college campuses throughout the United States by bringing speakers from Israel to discuss issues affecting Israel, how the nation is covered in the media and its role as the only democracy in the Middle East.

The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Students are encouraged to pre-register for the event at www.caravanfordemocracy.org.

"Shimon Peres will provide a unique opportunity for Yale students to hear from a politician who has been at the forefront of Israel's peace endeavors," says Yale sophomore Sara Robinson, one of three Caravan fellows at Yale. "I look forward to the discussions his visit will spark."

Active in politics since the age of 16, Peres has held many positions in the Israeli government, including serving as the nation's eighth prime minister. In 1994, he co-authored the Oslo Accords for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. In 1997, he created the Peres Center for Peace to advance Arab-Israeli joint ventures. In May 2006, he was appointed vice premier, minister for the development of the Negev and Galilee.

In addition to Caravan for Democracy, Peres' visit is sponsored by the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, Yale Friends of Israel, Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, the Yale College Council, the Middle East Council of the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies, the Yale Political Union, The Yale Politic and the Yale Israel Journal.

Caravan fellows at Yale are assisted by Amy Aaland, executive director of Slifka Center and Rabbi James Ponet, the Howard M. Holtzmann Jewish Chaplain at Yale.
