YaleGlobal Online crosses 100-million mark in number of 'hits' YaleGlobal Online, the University's magazine on globalization, has crossed the 100-million mark in the number of hits it has received from readers the world over. The accumulated total of hits since the multimedia magazine was launched four years ago represents a substantial rise in readership. In its first year, the magazine received more than 6 million hits. The latest tally shows that visitors from 160 countries have come to the site, and the total number of pages viewed stands at 10.487 million. The mission of YaleGlobal Online, the flagship publication of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization, is to explore, analyze and debate the implications of the growing interconnectedness of the world. The magazine went online on Nov. 19, 2002, with an article by Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen, titled "It's Right to Rebel." In the ensuing years, YaleGlobal has published a steady stream of original analytical articles on various aspects of globalization by renowned individuals, including members of the Yale community, scholars from other universities, and public- and private-sector experts from around the world. By agreement, YaleGlobal original articles are regularly reproduced in scores of international publications including the International Herald Tribune, The South China Morning Post (Hong Kong), Bangkok Post, Straits Times, Korea Herald, The Hindu, The Daily Star (Beirut), Khaleej Times (Dubai) and La Vanguardia (Barcelona). Some YaleGlobal articles have been reprinted in world newspapers more than 1,100 times. YaleGlobal articles have also been translated and published in Chinese, French, Hungarian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Urdu and Vietnamese. By individual arrangements with a number of U.S. and international publications, YaleGlobal also reprints articles relating to various aspects of globalization with summary text written by its staff. These and all the original YaleGlobal articles published to date -- totaling more than 3,000 -- are permanently archived on the site, providing a resource for researchers on globalization. YaleGlobal also has permanently archived essays on the history of globalization, a slide show on "What Is Globalization?" and a flash-media presentation on television and globalization. Academic articles as well as book reviews and book excerpts are other features of the site. Interviews with experts, important scholars and public officials have also been regularly video-streamed from the site and remain permanently on display. Kudos for the publication have come from a variety of high-visibility sources. Harvard Business School's Working Knowledge magazine said, "This beautiful as well as insightful online publication from the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization looks at both historic and current trends shaping the forces of globalization." The website globalization.about.com called YaleGlobal "one of the most comprehensive and thoughtful spots on the Internet for understanding the changes taking place around the world." The Carnegie Council's Policy Innovation website includes YaleGlobal on its list. In 2005, YaleGlobal's editor Nayan Chanda was awarded the Shorenstein Award in Journalism, and the judges cited YaleGlobal as one of the reasons for his selection. "We are delighted by the reader response to our magazine," says Chanda. "Our success reflects the worldwide hunger for informed and non-partisan analysis of the issues of globalization hitting the headlines everyday." Chanda added that he believes the quality of the selection of articles published five days a week and the trustworthiness of a publication from Yale explain the growing popularity of YaleGlobal in a crowded field of online publications.
