President Richard C. Levin announced the appointment of Nydia A. Gonzalez as Yale's chief diversity officer.
Gonzalez, formerly the director of diversity programs at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, will join the staff of Yale on Feb. 26.
"I am delighted that Nydia Gonzalez has agreed to bring her extensive global experience and organizational diversity management knowledge to Yale," said Levin. "I am convinced that through her efforts we will further establish Yale University as a leader in diversity, inclusion and worklife."
At Yale, Gonzalez will head a newly organized unit that combines, under a single umbrella, the Resource Office on Disabilities, the Office for Equal Opportunity Programs, the Worklife and Childcare Office and the Staff Diversity Office.
Gonzalez will serve as a primary resource to the University's affinity and networking groups, and will work closely with the University officers, faculty and staff from across the campus in developing and implementing a strategic plan designed to advance an environment in which diversity is valued and cultivated.
Reporting to Robert Schwartz, associate vice president and chief human resources officer, Gonzalez will assist diversity officers across the campus and work in close partnership with Kim Bottomly, deputy provost for science, technology and faculty development. Bottomly, an immunobiologist, was appointed in 2005 to work on increasing faculty diversity across the institution, improving recruitment and retention of women and under-represented minorities in the sciences and enhancing career development for all members of the faculty.
Prior to her work at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Gonzalez was the director of Global Diversity and International Training Programs at Dell Computer Corporation in Round Rock, Texas. During the course of her career she has worked in Indonesia for the Atlantic Richfield Corporation, in Japan for the Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance Company, as well as in Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
Gonzalez earned her B.A. from the University of North Texas, and received training and certification for her work in diversity from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. She is a recognized authority in this area and has been a keynote speaker and presenter at numerous diversity conferences worldwide. Her community involvement included mentoring economically disadvantaged women and helping them to pursue a fresh start in life. She has volunteered extensively with the homeless, underprivileged and working poor throughout her career.
