In Memoriam: Nelson Polsby

Former president of the University Council

Nelson W. Polsby, a Yale alumnus who served the University for over 20 years as head of its University Council, passed away on Feb. 6.

One of the foremost political scientists studying American politics, Polsby wrote or edited at least 15 books and scores of articles on topics ranging from Congress to the presidency, political parties, policymaking and the media. He also edited The American Political Science Review, one of the most prestigious publications in the field. Polsby had served on the faculty of the University of California-Berkeley since 1967 and was the Heller Professor of Political Science there.

He held two Yale degrees, an M.A. (1958) and a Ph.D. (1961). He served on the Yale University Council 1978-2000 and was its president 1986-1993. The University honored him for his years of service with its Wilbur Cross Medal and Yale Medal.

Polsby is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda; his daughters, Emily, of Berkeley and Lisa Susan Polsby, of Naperville, Illinois; his son, Daniel, of Mountain View, California; his brothers Daniel, of Fairfax, Virginia, and Allen, of Bethesda, Maryland; and two grandsons.
