Ashley Jackson

Recital will feature the winners of
undergraduate music competition

Ashley Jackson '08, Lauren Libaw '09 and Elizabeth Schurgin '07 -- three students who have already made their marks in the musical world -- have added another honor to their long lists of musical achievements.

The three have been selected as co-winners of the Friends of Music at Yale's 2006-2007 Undergraduate Recital Competition. As such, they will perform in a recital on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 3 p.m. in Sudler Recital Hall of William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St. A reception will follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

Performing as a duo for the first part of the recital program, Schurgin, a bassoonist, and Jackson, a harpist, will play five musical pieces: Ravel's "Pièce en Forme de Habanera" (arranged for bassoon and harp), Debussy's "Arabesque No. 1 pour piano" and "Syrinx pour bassoon seul," Jolivet's "Pastorales de Noël" and Saint-Saëns' "Sonate por Basson et Harpe" (piano). They will be accompanied by flutist Alexis Fitts '08 for the Jolivet composition.

The second half of the program will feature Libaw, a soprano, singing selections by Handel, Fauré, Paisiello, Bellini, Verdi and Donizetti, as well as "Theme and Variations" by Mozart/A. Adams. She will be accompanied by pianist Daniel Schlosberg '10.

Jackson, of Timothy Dwight College, is the principal harpist of the Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO) and a member of the Berkeley Orchestra, Saybrook Orchestra and Yale Bach Society. She studies harp with June Han at the Yale School of Music, and she has previously studied at the Juilliard School of Music Pre-College Division with Emily Oppenheimer. A 2003-2004 ARTS Merit Award winner in the music/instrumental category, she received the 2004 New Jersey Governor's Award in the Arts and was a semi-finalist in the 2003 American Harp Society Competition. She was a gold medalist in the NAACP ACT-SO instrumental competition for three consecutive years. Among other honors, Jackson was presented an award from Yale's Afro-American Cultural Center for outstanding musical achievements and won two principal concerto competitions at the University: the 2005 Berkeley Concerto competition and the 2005 YSO William Waite Concerto Competition. As winner of the latter award, she will be featured in a YSO concert on April 14.

Elizabeth Schurgin

Schurgin, of Trumbull College, is majoring in history and is enrolled in the Yale College/School of Music B.A./M.M. program. She plans to graduate with a Master of Music degree in the spring of 2008. A bassoon player for nine years, she currently studies with Frank Morelli at the Yale School of Music. This past summer, as a winner of the Lewis Curtis Fellowship for Travel, Schurgin traveled to Turin, Italy, to research the original manuscripts of Antonio Vivaldi's bassoon concerti. She has played principal bassoon in the YSO since her freshman year and has served as an officer in the YSO, helping to organize several Halloween shows. A member of many other musical groups on campus, Schurgin is also on the Yale Women's Club Water Polo Team. As its captain for the 2005-2006 season, she led the team to a New England Championship title and 13th place in the Nationals.

Lauren Libaw

Libaw, of Davenport College, is majoring in music and Italian. In her first year at Yale, she sang the title roles in Poulenc's "Les Marmelles de Tiresias" and Handel's "Semele" for the Opera Theater of Yale College. A member of Yale Schola Cantorum, she also appeared as a soloist with both the Yale Bach Society and the Yale Undergraduate Musical Theater Company. A native of Pasadena, California, Libaw began singing as a member of the Los Angeles Opera in "Magic Flute," "Werther" and Tobias Pickar's "Fantastic Mr. Fox." She has also sung with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Libaw recently won first place in the Friends of Arts Education at the Cerritos Center Scholarship competition and is the 2005 winner of the Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Awards in classical voice. In the summer of 2007, she will create the role of Endymion in the Los Angeles world premiere of Peter Ash's "Keepers of the Night." In addition, she will sing the role of the Spirit with David Stern conducting Britten's "Curlew River" at the Japan Society of New York. Libaw studies opera with Patricia McCaffrey in New York and plans to pursue a career in opera.

The accompanists for the competition winners are all accomplished musicians as well. Schlosberg is a pianist and composer who was won numerous piano solo, concerto and composition competitions and has performed as a soloist with six symphony orchestras. He studies piano at Yale with Wei-Yi Yang and is now directing the winter opera "Hansel and Gretel" for the Opera Theater of Yale College.

Elliot was principal flutist in the YSO during the 2005-2006 academic year and is now auditioning for European conservatories. Fitts is currently the principal flutist of the YSO.

The Friends of Music at Yale is an organization that supports undergraduate musical education and hosts the annual competition for undergraduate musical performers.
