Inaugural symposium to explore transnational history of sexuality
"Transnational Histories of Sexuality," the inaugural symposium of the Yale Research Initiative on the History of Sexualities, will take place on Saturday, April 7, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St.
The symposium is free and open to the public.
The organizers write: "Most histories of sexuality have assumed the nation as backdrop or used it as a framework. This one-day symposium explores how thinking transnationally would change our understanding of the history of sexuality and, conversely, how engaging with the history of sexuality would reshape our understanding of transnational studies."
Speakers and their topics will include Ann Laura Stoler, The New School for Social Research, "Biosecurity and Bodily Exposures: Historical Perspectives on the Sexual Politics of Defense"; Afsaneh Najmabadi, Harvard University, "Sex in Change: Configurations of Sexuality and Gender in Iran"; Héctor Carrillo, San Francisco State University, "Sexual Migration, Globalization and Change: Mexican Gay and Bisexual Men"; and Dagmar Herzog, City University of New York Graduate Center, "Syncopated Sex: Toward a Transnational History of Sexuality in Europe." An hour-long roundtable discussion will conclude the program.
The Yale Research Initiative on the History of Sexualities fosters the study of, and theoretical reflection on, the history of sexualities, especially as they intersect with other axes of social difference and inequality. It promotes inquiry into lesbian, gay and transgender history, and the role of sexuality in the history of the self, culture, nation and empire. Based in the Department of History, the initiative sponsors lectures, workshops, symposia and collaborative research. The faculty co-directors are Professors George Chauncey and Joanne Meyerowitz.
