The game of kings (and queens and bishops)

Hundreds of K-12 students from around the state spent time pondering their next move during the Connecticut Open and Scholastic State Chess Championships, held March 24-25 in the Lanman Center at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Many of the participants learned the game under the guidance of tutors from two of the tournament's sponsors: the Yale College Chess Club and Educational Technologies, a company founded by Jim Celone '83 B.A., which runs programs in 15 area schools promoting the teaching of chess as a means to developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The tournament was also sponsored by Achievement First, a non-profit school reform group.
