President Levin announces departmental chairs

President Richard C. Levin has announced the following faculty appointments: Michael Della Rocca, professor of philosophy, to continue as chair of the Department of Philosophy for an additional one-year term; and Haun Saussy, professor of comparative literature and East Asian languages and literatures, as acting chair of the Department of Comparative Literature for the 2007-2008 academic year.


Yale historian to give talk at the Library of Congress

Michael Auslin, associate professor of history, will give a talk at the Library of Congress on Friday, April 6, at a symposium titled "Highlights of the Japan-U.S. Relationship: History, Cultural Exchange and Future Development."

The symposium, sponsored by the Library of Congress and the Embassy of Japan, coincides with the 2007 National Cherry Blossom Festival. Auslin, an expert on U.S.-Japan relations, will discuss his current research on the growth of cultural exchange in the 20th century.

Ob/Gyn department hosts free health seminar at library

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences will sponsor a free special health seminar at the Middletown Russell Library, 123 Broad St., on Thursday, April 5, at 6 p.m.

Dr. Richard Bercik, director of urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery, will discuss changes in vaginal support after childbirth, pelvic pressure or pain, and reconstructive vaginal procedures. Dr. Hugh Taylor, director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, will discuss menopause, endometriosis and infertility. Refreshments will be served.

School of Nursing names new public affairs director

John Powers has been appointed director of public affairs at the School of Nursing (YSN).

Powers is a graduate of Boston University with a B.S. in public relations and mass communications, and a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with an M.S. in secondary education. He has 20 years of experience in communications, media relations, marketing, web design and content, and fundraising in non-profit settings. Most recently, he was director of communications at the Children's Home in Cromwell, where he developed and managed the overall communications strategy for the agency.

At YSN, he will assist in developing and implementing a strategic, multi-faceted communications program to support the school's mission, goals and objectives.
