Cynthia Smith has been appointed as assistant provost for biomedical administration, announced Provost Andrew Hamilton.
In her new role, Smith will work with the deputy and associate provosts to implement academic and provostial policies and procedures, especially in the School of Medicine and its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and in the School of Nursing; to oversee health-related academic support units; and to implement policies and procedures and advance compliance in certain research compliance areas, such as human subjects protections, animal care and use, environmental health and safety, and conflicts of interest and commitment.
Trained in accounting and organizational leadership, Smith has over 25 years of management experience in non-profit and for-profit entities. She also has considerable experience in the design and implementation of financial systems and administrative policies and procedures.
Smith came to Yale in 1997 as associate controller and for the past five years has also served as director of financial systems and services. She assumed her new post on Feb. 1.
"Cynthia Smith has a superb record of accomplishment at Yale and is highly regarded for her effectiveness and collegiality," says Hamilton. "Her financial and business systems expertise will expand the capabilities of the Provost's Office and help us better support the Yale community."
