into state-of-the-art facility
Work has begun on the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, a new facility for the Yale men's and women's tennis programs being funded by generous leadership gifts from Samuel J. Heyman '60 and the estate of the late Joseph F. Cullman III '35.
"Yale tennis was an important part of my college years, and I'm delighted that I can make a contribution to what will be a state-of-the-art indoor tennis facility at Yale," said Heyman.
The project will include a new building located next to the Cullman Courts on Derby Avenue, as well as renovations of the current facility. When completed, the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center will feature eight courts, four of them new, a viewing area and lobby, as well as new locker rooms and a team room.
Alex Dorato, the Cary Leeds Coach of Men's Tennis, said, "When this project is complete we will have eight courts and one of the best indoor facilities in the Ivy League. We believe this new facility will help us attract the best and the brightest to be part of the tennis programs at Yale."
Danielle Lund, head coach of women's tennis, added, "We are extremely grateful to Yale University, the Heyman and Cullman families, as well as the many members of the Yale Tennis Association who helped make this project possible."
The plans call for site preparation and excavation this summer. After the initial site work is complete, renovation of the existing Cullman Courts and construction of the new building will proceed simultaneously.
Yale Director of Athletics Tom Beckett said, "We are thrilled to announce the beginning of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center project. As a result of the leadership gifts of Sam Heyman '60 and the Cullman family, along with tremendous support from the University and members of our tennis community, our dream has been realized."
The original Cullman Courts were built in 1972 through a gift from Joseph Cullman III '35 and named in honor of his father, the late Joseph Cullman Jr., Yale College Class of 1904.
