Milestones in building Yale's medical
and scientific research strength

2000

Yale announced $500 million investment in facilities to support science and technology research and education, and a $500 million investment in facilities for the Yale School of Medicine.


2001

Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics created.

Yale dedicated Class of '54 Environmental Science Center, a 99,000-square-foot building representing an investment of $42 million, including $25 million from the Yale College Class of 1954's 54/50 Fund.


2002

Yale establishes Center for Genomics and Proteomics with $5 million space renovation and seed funding, followed by $3.8 million for Phase II funding in June 2006. This center has generated in excess of $55 million in new outside grant funding.


2003

Committee on Yale College Education recommends expanded science teaching.

Anlyan Center for Biomedical Research and Education opened. This 457,000-square-foot building represents an investment of $177 million.

Department of Biomedical Engineering established.


2004

Kavli Institute for Neuroscience at Yale endowed.


2005

Gates Grand Challenge $17 million award to Richard Flavell to develop a predictive model system for creating safe and effective vaccines.

Launch of science curriculum reform recommendations from Committee on Yale College Education.

Yale Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) established with $7.5 million National Science Foundation award.

Daniel L. Malone Engineering Center dedicated. This 63,117-square-foot building represents an investment of $38 million, including $24 million from alumnus John C. Malone.

Class of '54 Chemistry Research Building opened. This new 105,000-square-foot building represents an investment of $59 million, with $25 million from the Yale College Class of 1954's 54/50 Fund.

Interdisciplinary Program in Cellular Neuroscience, Neurodegeneration and Repair established.


2006

Yale Stem Cell Program established, bringing in $7.8 million in state funding in November 2006.

Yale Institute for Nanoscience and Quantum Engineering (YINQE) established with $5.5 million for infrastructure and seed projects.

Yale School of Medicine received a $57.3 million Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. The funding includes $31.5 million in new resources to strengthen clinical research and $25.8 million to continue existing programs.


2007

Opening of the Yale Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Center. The state-of-the-art renovated and newly constructed 17,000-square foot space represents an investment of $13 million.

Department of Immunobiology established, expanding and extending the seminal contributions of the forerunning medical school section.

Program for Human Translational Immunology launched.

Yale Autism Center of Excellence recognized with $12.5 million grant from the NIH.

Groundbreaking for Kroon Hall, new home of Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Yale Cancer Center renewed with $16.7 million grant as one of the 39 National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Completion of the Amistad Street Building, housing laboratories for interdepartmental programs in Stem Cell Biology, Human Translational Immunology, and Vascular Biology & Transplantation. This represents an investment of $88.6 million.

Yale announces acquisition of Bayer complex.
