The Elm City will once again play host to the only combined men's and women's summer tournament leading up to the U.S. Open when Pilot Pen Tennis returns to New Haven Aug. 17-25.
Presented by Schick, the tournament will take place at the Connecticut Tennis Center, 45 Yale Ave.
This year's competition, which will be nationally televised for over 20 hours on CBS and ESPN2, will feature 28 women and 46 men vying for the top prizes. Leading the women's field are world No. 4-ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova, world No. 6-ranked Amélie Mauresmo, and world No. 11-ranked and Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli. Headlining the men's field will be world No. 5-ranked and defending Pilot Pen champion Nikolay Davydenko, world No. 8-ranked Tommy Robredo and world No. 9-ranked James Blake.
Qualifying rounds will be held Friday-Saturday, Aug. 17-18. The main draw will take place Sunday-Saturday, Aug 19-25. The purse for the tournament is $1,250,000 -- $600,000 for the women, $650,000 for the men.
Special events during the competition will include Comcast/ESPN Kids Day on Sunday, Aug. 19, beginning at 9 a.m., with tickets starting at $8 and music, giveaways, autograph sessions and appearances by professional tennis players and Michelob Ultra Night on Saturday, Aug. 25, 5-7 p.m., featuring music by the band The Sellouts prior to the evening's matches.
