More Yale-related MacArthur Fellows

In addition to Professor Lisa Curran, whose John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship was announced in the last issue, Yale has affiliations with two other recipients of this year's "genius grant": narrative journalist Adrian LeBlanc, who earned an M.A. in legal studies from the Law School, and playwright Sarah Ruhl, whose "Eurydice" is now being staged at the Yale Repertory Theatre.

LeBlanc's work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Esquire and the Village Voice. She wrote her first book, "Random Family: Love, Drugs, Trouble, and Coming of Age in the Bronx," after spending 10 years researching and interviewing a family in the New York City burrough.

In their description of LeBlanc's work, the MacArthur Foundation wrote, "With an eye for detail and a passion for depth, Adrian LeBlanc is forging a new form of literary reportage and illuminating worlds little known and less understood."

In addition to "Eurydice," which she wrote while she was a graduate student at Brown University, Ruhl is the author of "The Clean House," a Pulitzer Prize finalist, which had its debut at the Yale Rep.

Of Ruhl's "Eurydice," which runs through Oct. 14 at the Yale Rep, the MacArthur Foundation said: "Written in sparse, contemporary language, the story is told from the perspective of Eurydice and examines the power of love between husband and wife, and father and daughter. Original in tone and setting, Ruhl captures the pain of loss, the lessening of pain over time, and the necessity of forgetting. ... This young playwright is emerging as a powerful presence in the American theater."
