Thorne Anderson's image "Falluja, September," showing the effects of the Iraq war, is among the photographs on view in "Unembedded."

Works by photojournalists in Iraq on view at ISM

A touring exhibition of photographs and other works titled "Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalists on the War in Iraq -- Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, Kael Alford, Thorne Anderson and Rita Leistner" will be on view Oct. 2-Nov. 28 at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM), 409 Prospect St.

"Unembedded" pulls together photographs and statements by the independent photojournalists that are drawn from a book by the same name published by Chelsea Green in 2005.

Through the U.S. military's embedded journalism program, the United States has become accustomed to photos made from inside the American military cordon. Independent journalists and photojournalists, on the other hand, are able to explore in-depth on the day-to-day realities of Iraq, reporting without the protection of the U.S. military. The four photojournalists represented in this exhibition hail from different areas (Alford from New York, Anderson from Alabama, Leistner from Canada and Abdul-Ahad from Baghdad). In Iraq, each was able to document issues often not reported in the mainstream media. These include the insurgency as seen from inside the separate resistance movements; civilians affected by the violent battles between the United States and insurgent forces; the growing conservatism and fundamentalism in the country and their effects on women; and the devastating effects of civilian casualties.

The exhibition is open weekdays 9 a.m.-4 p.m. It is presented by ISM with support from the Divinity School. There will be a reception in honor of the exhibition and the photographers on Thursday, Oct. 19, 4:30-6 p.m. in the Great Hall of ISM. Free parking is available. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

"The Spirit of War: A Discussion with Thorne Anderson" will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 4-6 p.m. in Marquand Chapel, 409 Prospect St. The discussion with the photojournalist, presented by the Divinity School and the Initiative on Religion and Politics at Yale, is also free and open to the public.
