Robert Burger, formerly the associate program director for the U.S. Science Support Program of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions, has been appointed assistant provost for science and technology by Provost Andrew D. Hamilton.
As assistant provost, he will support the deputy and associate provosts in the application of academic and financial policies, planning of space and forwarding of public relations projects and non-ladder faculty appointments. He will also help to implement faculty development initiatives and issues related to basic science within the biomedical sciences.
Burger, who assumed his position on Sept. 18, has also held positions at the U.S. Geological Survey, BP-Amoco Inc. and Rizzo Associates Inc., an environmental consulting firm.
"The appointment of Robert Burger will help us manage the many changes engendered by new science initiatives and new building and renovation projects, and will enhance our participation in programs focused on faculty development and diversity," says Hamilton.
Burger, a 1993 Yale College graduate with a B.S. in geology and geophysics, holds an M.S. in earth sciences from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in geological sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.
