Yale Cancer Center and YNHH offer free programs on cancer treatment The Yale Cancer Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH) are teaming up to present two programs for the general public.
There will be a talk titled "New Discoveries in Cancer Treatment" on Wednesday, Nov. 1, in YNHH's East Pavilion cafeteria, 20 York St. The lecture is part of the ongoing Understanding Cancer Lecture Series for patients and families living with cancer. Dr. Edward Chu, chief of medical oncology at Yale Cancer Center, will discuss the newest advances in the treatment of cancer, including discoveries that have been made at Yale and are currently available through clinical trials at YNHH. Following his lecture, there will be a question and answer session. A light supper will be served at 6 p.m., provided by Subway. The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. Validated parking at the nearby Air Rights Garage is available.
A symposium titled "Frankly Speaking about Lung Cancer" will be held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 9 a.m.-noon in the Anlyan Center at 300 Cedar St. The symposium will provide current information on lung cancer risk, detection and treatments. Dr. Scott Gettinger, assistant professor of medicine in the Yale Cancer Center's Section of Medical Oncology, will give the keynote address, "Treatment Advances in Lung Cancer." This will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Gettinger, Dr. Frank Detterbeck, Dr. Joseph Colasanto and nurses Irene Scanlon and Rebecca Sipples. The panel will be led by Dr. Lynn Tanoue, co-director of the Yale Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Program. In addition, Detterbeck, co-director of the Yale Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Program, will present an overview of the multidisciplinary care offered at Yale Cancer Center and an update on the progress of the Yale-New Haven Cancer Hospital, which is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
