Leonora Tubbs Tisdale

Leonora Tubbs Tisdale named
the Clement-Muehl Professor

Leonora Tubbs Tisdale, newly named as the Clement-Muehl Professor of Homiletics, teaches the theory and practice of preaching, with special interest in congregational studies and preaching, women's ways of preaching and prophetic preaching.

Prior to coming to Yale this year, she was a consulting theologian at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City and provided theological oversight for its Center for Christian Studies, a theological academy offering courses in five disciplines for over 2,000 lay people in the New York City area. She also shared in the church's Sunday morning worship leadership, preaching and other pastoral duties, and supervised the church's seminary interns and candidates for the ministry.

Tisdale is the author or editor of five books, including "Preaching as Local Theology and Folk Art," "Making Room at the Table: An Invitation to Multicultural Worship" and three volumes of "The Abingdon Women's Preaching Annual." She also wrote the chapter on the Riverside Church preachers in "The History of the Riverside Church in the City of New York," published in celebration of the church's 75th anniversary. She is currently co-editing a book for teachers of preaching.

Tisdale earned her B.A. in religion at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Union Theological Seminary in Virginia (now Union-PSCE) and a Ph.D. in practical theology (homiletics) at Princeton Theological Seminary. She began her career in ministry as the director of youth ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She later was a volunteer-in-mission at the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul, South Korea, where she was an instructor in English and theology before serving with her husband, the Reverend W. Alfred Tisdale Jr., as co-pastor of the Ecumenical Parish of Four Churches (Presbyterian and Episcopal) in central Virginia. She became an assistant professor at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia in 1988, moving five years later to Princeton Theological Seminary, where she taught for the next eight years and was named the Elizabeth M. Engle Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship. She was an adjunct faculty member at Union Theological Seminary in New York during the fall 2005 semester.

A former president of the Academy of Homiletics, Tisdale is also a member of Societas Homiletica, an international society of teachers of preaching.
