The drawing of Elmina Castle, above, a European slave trading fort on the Africa Gold Coast, is part of the exhibition “Documenting Slavery,” on view through Oct. 31. The illustration is by Robert Durand and is from his “Journal de bord d’un Negrier,” the journal he kept during his travels as a first lieutenant on a French slave ship. The Beinecke Library show honors the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade.

This advertising poster for “Captains Courageous” (The Century Co., New York, 1897) is on view in the exhibit “Rudyard Kipling: The Books I Leave Behind.” The show, on view through Sept. 15, focuses on the life and work of Kipling, with emphasis on the many varied editions of his writings. It features items from the collection given to Yale by David Alan Richards ’67 B.A., ’72 J.D.
