Memorial service to be held for astronomy researcher Dorrit Hoffleit
The Department of Astronomy is hosting a memorial celebration in honor of Dorrit
Hoffleit, retired senior research associate in the Department of Astronomy, who
died on April 9, shortly after her 100th birthday.
The memorial will take place on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. Those interested
in attending should call (203) 432-3118 by Sept. 4 for location information.
Hoffleit studied features of stars visible to the naked eye. She was creator of
“The Bright Star Catalogue,” a compendium of information on the 9,110 brightest stars in the sky. She also
co-authored
“The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes,” containing precise distance measurements to 8,112 stars, information critical
to understanding the kinematics of the Milky Way galaxy and the evolution of
the solar neighborhood. She also wrote
“Astronomy at Yale, 1701-1968,” produced hundreds of scholarly papers, and for 15 years provided “News Notes” on astronomical events and trends for Sky and Telescope magazine.
A longtime role model for women in astronomy, Hoffleit was a former director of
the Maria Mitchell Observatory at Nantucket and conducted much of her research
there. She was a member of Yale’s Department of Astronomy 1956-1975. She continued to pursue her research well
into her 90s, making her one of the oldest working scientists in her field.
Last year, Yale marked Hoffleit’s 100th year with a year-long centennial celebration, culminating with a
luncheon in her honor on her birthday, March 13.
