Reception will celebrate United Way donors as campaign continues
There will be a reception on Monday, Nov. 19, both to celebrate the success
to date of this year’s Yale-United Way Campaign and to present prizes
to individuals and departments whose donations have contributed toward its
goal of raising $1.2 million.
The Donors’ Celebration Reception will be held 12:30-2:30 p.m. at University
Commons.
Anyone who makes a pledge (even at the door) is eligible to attend the reception
and win one of many prizes for individual donors. In addition, 10 departments
(five each from the Central and Medical campuses) will receive prizes for highest
participation rate, highest average pledge, largest increase in rate and pledge,
and most creative campaign.
A list of departmental prizes and drawings can be found at www.yale.edu/unitedway. They include a skating party at Ingalls Rink; a behind-the-scenes
tour of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library; a guided tour of the Yale
Center for British Art; and a children’s party at the Peabody Museum of
Natural History.
Prizes for individual donors include:
• Two domestic airline tickets on United Airlines;
• Payne Whitney Gymnasium membership valid for one year;
• Dinner for two at the following restaurants: Thali, The Union League Café and
John Davenport’s at The Omni Hotel; and
• $25 gift certificates to the Barnes and Noble Yale College Bookstore.
Many of the individuals who have played a significant role in this year’s
campaign will speak at the Nov. 19 celebration.
“By giving to this year’s campaign for United Way of Greater New
Haven, we are making an investment in this community and improving lives,” says
Janet Lindner, chair of this year’s campaign. “Every contribution
counts. No contribution is too small.”
Lindner urges those who have not yet made a pledge to visit www.yale.edu/unitedway and help Yale reach its goal.
To date, the campaign has raised over $600,000. “We are on our way to reaching
the $1.2 million that we have set as our goal for this community, but we will
need increased participation and the help of people all over this University
to do so,” Lindner says.
The United Way drive — the only general fundraising effort to Yale community
members sponsored by the University — helps support the United Way of Greater
New Haven and its more than 40 partner agencies which serve nine towns in the
Greater New Haven area. United Way is focusing its resources in three community
priority areas: Economically Vibrant Communities (Economic Opportunity and Housing);
Successful Children and Youth (Success By 6 and School Age Youth); and Healthy
and Connected Communities (Health and Civic Engagement).
To help Yale reach its goal, President Richard C. Levin and the officers of the
University have offered a challenge match of $100,000 for all new and increased
dollars in the campaign.
