Special events to highlight
holiday season in New Haven
Every Thursday in December, there will be special evening events sponsored
in part by Yale in the shopping districts in downtown New Haven.
To kick off the holiday season, the Chapel District — the area that includes
Chapel, York, High and College streets — will host “First Thursday” 5-9
p.m. on Dec. 6.
During the event, shoppers can get a free stocking and fill it with complimentary
gifts from participating shops. These will include ARTaments — i.e., little
works of art — from the White Space Gallery (1020 Chapel St.), bath products
from Idiom (1014 Chapel St.), tea bags from the Yale Center for British Art Museum
Shop (1080 Chapel St.), note cards from Villarina’s (1092 Chapel St.) and
more.
The event will also include special restaurant promotions, live music, discounts
and refreshments. Shoppers can also take time to enjoy art at the Yale Center
for British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery (1111 Chapel St.), which
will be open until 8 p.m.
Several local merchants are also offering special discounts to University employees.
These include the Barnes & Noble-Yale Bookstore (77 Broadway), 20% off Dec.
3-10; Seychelles (1020 Chapel St.), 10% off; Sogno, Boutique of Dreams (83 Audubon
St.), 10% off; and Villarina’s, 10% off food items.
Shoppers are also reminded that many Broadway shops, including J. Crew and Urban
Outfitters, are open until 9 p.m. year round,. Many are now offering extended
holiday hours.
