Memorial service for Dr. Melvin Lewis

There will be a memorial service on Sunday, Dec. 16, for Dr. Melvin Lewis, professor emeritus and senior research scientist in the Yale Child Study Center.

Lewis died on April 28 in New Haven at age 79. The service in his honor will take place at 4 p.m. in the Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale, 80 Wall St. A reception will follow.

Born and educated in London, Lewis was internationally known as a scholar and editor. During his 12-year term as editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 1975-1987, he transformed it into the flagship American journal at a time of rapid discoveries and developments in the field. He was the founding consulting editor of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America, which he led for 14 years.

His achievements included the first three editions of the “Comprehensive Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.” Originally trained as a pediatrician, Lewis directed the Consultation-Liaison Service in pediatrics at Yale for many years.
