Award-winning Yale building design projects are highlighted in traveling exhibition
Two Yale building design projects received Honor Awards from American Institute
of Architects (AIA) Connecticut and are featured in the group’s traveling
exhibition, which will be on view throughout the month of March at the New
Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm St.
The Louis I. Kahn Art Gallery, part of the Yale University Art Gallery, and
the Science Hill Parking Garage were among five projects to win Honor Awards,
while nine other projects from around the state received Honorable Mention
designations.
The Kahn Gallery renovation by the Polshek Partnership Architects of New York
won in the Preservation category. The judges wrote of the project: “The
new window system solved weathering issues but respected the original design
intent. All restoration decisions respected and brought back the original splendor
to the building.”
The Science Hill Parking Garage, designed by Herbert S. Newman & Partners
of New Haven, was cited in the Built category. The judges wrote: “The
entry pavilion of this parking garage is in scale with the neighboring buildings;
both scale and detailing fit into the neighborhood. ... The beauty of the plan
is that car and pedestrian entries are kept separate.”
In addition to the traveling exhibition, images of the winning projects are
on view at www.aiact.org.
