Contemporary images of the Virgin Mary are featured in exhibit ‘Highly
Favored’
In one story from the Gospel According to Luke, the archangel Gabriel visits
a young Jewish woman and tells her she is so “highly favored” that
she has been chosen to bear God’s son.
Contemporary images of that woman, now known as the Virgin Mary, are featured
in the exhibition “Highly Favored,” which will be on view March
3-28 at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM), 409 Prospect St.
The ISM show, a traveling exhibition from Christians in the Visual Arts, explores
several themes: how the story of Mary, both as an historical person and a spiritual
icon, promotes understanding of the interplay of the human and the divine;
how it has helped shape views of humanity in general and woman in particular;
and how it has inspired theological reflection and artistic vision in the three
major traditions of the Christian Church: Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox.
“Highly Favored” is being presented by ISM with support from the
Divinity School.
The exhibition is open to the public free of charge 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays.
There will be a reception at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, in the ISM Great
Hall.
