Symposium will explore human rights issues related to ‘extractive industries’

Issues at the intersection of business, human rights and development in the “extractive industries” — i.e., those involved in such activities as mining, drilling for fossil fuels and harvesting forestry products — will be examined at symposium on Saturday, March 8, at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

The event, titled “Corporate Social Responsibility in the Extractive Industries,” is the inaugural symposium of the Yale Human Rights & Development Law Journal. It will take place 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

“These industries present unique challenges and opportunities in the developing world,” says Nicole Hallett, editor-in-chief of the journal. “Their role and impact on human rights and development are deeply controversial, and we expect the symposium to generate thought-provoking discussion on the topic.”

The symposium will feature introductory remarks by Law School Dean Harold Hongju Koh and a keynote address by Gare Smith, a partner at the international dispute-resolution law firm of Foley Hoag LLP and co-founder of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility Practice Group. Panels throughout the day will explore topics such as the resource curse in developing countries, corporations in conflict zones, legal regimes versus voluntary codes, and the future of corporate social responsibility.
