Police Academy for citizens
to be held this spring
Members of the Yale and New Haven communities can get a behind-the-scenes
look at the workings of the Yale University Police Department this spring through
the Citizen’s Police Academy program.
Like the first session, held this fall, the spring Citizen’s Police Academy
is designed to provide participants with an increased understanding and awareness
of police operations and responsibilities.
The course will include both classroom training and hands-on activities. Participants
will discover how investigative services in the real world differ from those
on the police forensics show “CSI”; learn about patrol procedures;
receive personal safety information; and meet Eli, the bomb-detection dog.
The course will also include a tour of the facility, where participants can
see the department’s state-of-the-art communications and technology systems
and get an up-close look at the Firearms Automated Training System.
The academy is free of charge and will take place over a six-week period on
Tuesdays, 6-8:30 p.m., March 25-April 22 (as well as one Thursday: April 17).
Participants must be 18 years old. Classes will take place at the Yale University
Police Department, 101 Ashmun St.
Those interested in participating must register by Friday, March 14. Registration
is a two-step process. Individuals should sign up at http://learn.caim.yale.edu/lcdb/coursesclassinfo.asp?CourseID=1244. The Yale Police Department will contact each applicant
to arrange for a criminal history check. Once that process is completed, participants
will receive an e-mail confirmation. Space is limited, so participation in
the class is on a first-come, first-served basis.
For further information, contact Kitty Parente at (203) 432-4468 or kitty.parente@yale.edu.
