New film explores the life and work of Allen Forte

Bassett Productions of San Francisco recently completed a film on “The Life and Work of Allen Forte.”

Forte is the Battell Professor of Music Theory Emeritus in the Department of Music, where he was instrumental in initiating the Ph.D. program in music theory. His publications include 12 books and 80 articles. In 2000 Yale established an endowed professorship in his name.

The 51-minute film will be available on DVD in libraries across the country.

Student’s ‘Katrina Ballads’ to be performed March 5

Ted Hearne, a graduate student of composition at the School of Music, will have his collection of songs, “Katrina Ballads,” performed at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 292 Orange St.

The performance is an hour-long piece, combining different American music traditions and featuring 16 young artists. The texts are drawn from primary sources, featuring words spoken during the week following Hurricane Katrina. The purpose, according to Hearne, is “social activism through music — and increased awareness of the assistance still very much needed on the Gulf Coast.”

Tickets are $15 for adults; $8 for students. For more information, visit the website at www.katrinaballads.com.
