Yale volunteers once again to lend
a helping hand to city non-profits

Faculty, staff and students from all over the campus will team up to paint, plant, clean up parks and provide other forms of support to a wide range of local non-profit organizations on the fifth annual Yale Community Service Day, which is being held this year on Saturday, April 26.

All Yale students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in the event. In most cases, all that is needed is a willingness to help; no special skills are required.

Community Service Day will kick off on Saturday morning with a breakfast at 9 a.m. on Beinecke Plaza. After breakfast, teams of volunteers will receive materials and service assignments. All projects will be completed by 1 p.m. Transportation will be provided to and from the campus to the service locations.

The Yale College Council (YCC) is hosting this year’s event.

“For the past five years, Yale Community Service Day has been a great way for different groups — undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as well as faculty and staff — to interact with each other and celebrate Yale’s partnership with New Haven,” says Yale senior Larry W. Wise II, co-chair of the event.

Adds co-chair and YCC president Emily Schofield, “We look forward to the Yale community coming together again this spring on behalf of our New Haven neighbors.”

Yale participants will help with the following projects:

New Haven Reads — Volunteers will help shelve books at this organization, which provides free books to children and adults to improve literacy. They will also make a run to local stores to purchase supplies.

Connecticut Children’s Museum — Helpers will assist with indoor projects at this building, which houses the Creating Kids Child Care Center, the Creating Curriculum Child Care Provider Training Program and the museum itself.

New Haven Land Trust — A team will help with trail maintenance at the Pond Lily Nature Preserve.

Town Green Special Services — Volunteers will help the “Clean Team” perform a clean-up at Long Wharf for this organization, which works to improve the urban appeal of downtown New Haven.

Creative Arts Workshop — A team will help re-paint several areas at this regional center for education and classes in the visual arts.

East Rock Park — Volunteers will help with general clean-up efforts around the park.

Eli Whitney Museum — Volunteers will put together educational kits for children and assist with other projects at this educational organizational.

Solar Youth — Participants will help staff members at this local non-profit with an organic gardening day at their site.

Yale volunteers will get a free T-shirt for their efforts. To sign up as a Community Service Day volunteer, visit http://yalestation.org/csd. Volunteers will be contacted by Friday, April 18, with further details.
