Alumni to take part in day of service in communities throughout state
Alumni and friends of Yale will gather in cities across Connecticut to participate in the first ever Alumni Day of Service
on Saturday, April 19.
The event, organized by the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA) in conjunction local
Yale clubs and associations, will include a number of different community service
projects.
One group will plant trees and clear a wheelchair-accessible trail for the Stamford
Museum and Nature Center. Another will assist at Connecticut Foodshare, a regional
food bank that distributes more than 12 tons of food per day to nearly 400 local
programs in Hartford and Tolland counties. The New Haven contingent will help
the New Haven Ecology Project/Common Ground prepare an organic garden for spring
planting, assist the Urban Resource Initiative with planting and work with park
rangers at West Rock Nature Center on spring clean-up and trail maintenance.
Eight Yale Clubs will take part in the Day of Service. Alumni representing all
11 professional schools as well as Yale College are expected to participate.
Over 14,000 Yale alumni live in Connecticut.
Robin Reeves Zorthian (Yale College Class of 1976), president of the Yale Alumni
Association of Greenwich, is leading the volunteer effort.
“We know that alumni want to ‘give back,’ and the AYA wants
to give voice to this dedication,” says Mark Dollhopf (Class of 1977),
executive director of the AYA. “We want to channel this incredible energy
and drive by launching an annual Yale Day of Service for clubs and alumni groups
around the globe. We want to enable alumni to come together as Yalies in service
to others — whether through their local Yale Clubs or classes, or through
Yale’s many shared interest groups. By coming together we can be a stronger
and more visible force for change for the common good.”
Participating clubs include the Yale Club of New Haven, the Yale Alumni Association
of Greenwich, the Yale Club of Hartford, the Yale Club of Bristol, the Yale Club
of Meriden-Wallingford, the Yale Club of Northwest Connecticut, the Yale Club
of Eastern Connecticut and the Yale Club of Lower Fairfield County.
