Campus community is invited
to take Sustainability Pledge

Yale’s Office of Sustainability poses the following question to members of the campus community: Are you ready to commit to changing your habits in order to build a sustainable campus?

The office is launching the University’s first campus-wide Sustainability Pledge in conjunction with the celebration of Earth Day 2008 on Tuesday, April 22.

Designed to build upon the growing support for sustainability initiatives at Yale, the pledge program aims to illustrate how the ?collective actions of a large group of individuals at the University can contribute to the vision of a sustainable campus.

A statement on the Sustainability Pledge website notes: “One of the main barriers to sustainable action is the feeling that ‘I’m just one person’ — that alone, our actions will not have a significant impact. In reality, we are not alone. Yale University is a community of over 21,000 people. Yale is committed to developing and implementing best practices for a sustainable Yale campus. But we need to work together to achieve this.

“The pledge celebrates that our individual actions can contribute to the vision of a sustainable Yale campus. It is a collective statement about the importance of incorporating sustainability into our lives and our work, as individuals, as a university and as a society.”

By taking the pledge, faculty, staff and students will make a commitment to take at least three new actions to promote sustainability; to share information about the environmentally friendly things they are already doing; and to raise awareness by encouraging at least three other friends and colleagues to take the pledge.

The goal is to have at least 2,500 members of the Yale community take the pledge. Similar programs have been undertaken by universities across America.

To take the pledge, visit the website at www.yale.edu/sustainability/pledge.
