Scholars named to joint
posts at MacMillan Center

The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale has named two noted scholars to International Interdisciplinary Professorships.

Giovanni Maggi joined Yale this fall as professor of economics and international affairs. Thomas Pogge will come to the University in the fall of 2008 as professor of philosophy and international affairs.

Maggi came to Yale from Princeton University where he was professor of economics. His research and teaching interests include international trade, political economy and industrial organizations. He has written numerous articles for a variety of economics publications, including The American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, International Economic Review and The Quarterly Journal of Economics. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.

Pogge is a philosopher and professor of political science at Columbia University. He has published widely on Kant and in moral and political philosophy, including books on Rawls and global justice. His book “World Poverty and Human Rights” is widely regarded as one of the most important works on global justice. He is editor for social and political philosophy for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science. He holds adjunct professorial appointments in the Australian National University Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics and the Philosophy Department of the University of Oslo. Pogge received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard.

“The international, interdisciplinary professorships are unique in that faculty from throughout the University were consulted in identifying top scholars who can hold cutting-edge joint professorship appointments between arts and science departments and/or professional schools and departments,” said Ian Shapiro, the Henry R. Luce Director of the MacMillan Center. “The work of both Maggi and Pogge dovetails nicely with one of the substantive areas — justice and distribution — on which the center is focusing its research initiatives.”

The MacMillan Center is Yale’s focal point for encouraging and coordinating teaching and research on international affairs, societies and cultures around the world.
