Forum to examine ways that New Haven can become a ‘sustainable city’

A panel focusing on the question “Can New Haven become a sustainable city?” will take place 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, on the third floor of Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave.

The event — which is described as “A forum … with some answers” — will examine such topics as how to build a stronger economy for all of New Haven; the role of cultural resources in fostering civic engagement and a sense of place; how citizens can foster sustainable urban planning and smart growth; the importance of urban ecosystems, particularly the role of tree canopy in a sustainable city; and how large institutions can become more sustainable and contribute to a sustainable community.

The forum will be moderated by Michael Donoghue, director of the Peabody Museum and the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Panelists will include Karyn Gilvarg, director of the New Haven City Plan Department; Heidi Green, president of 1000 Friends of Connecticut; Bill Hosley, executive director of the New Haven Museum & Historical Society; Colleen Murphy-Dunning, director of the Urban Resources Initiative at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies (F&ES); Julie Newman, sustainability director at Yale; and Jerome Ringo, president of The Apollo Alliance and past chair of the board of the National Wildlife Federation.

Admission to the event is free, but space is limited. Those interested in attending should contact Emily Bryne at ebyrne@newhavenct.net or (203) 946-6377 by Monday, Oct. 1.

The forum is sponsored by F&ES, the Peabody Museum, the City of New Haven and Clean Air-Cool Planet. This is the New Haven component of the National Conversation on Climate Action event. For more information, visit www.climateconversation.org.
