This image of the interior of the United Church on the Green is one of the photographs by Robert A. Lisak featured in the exhibition "Sacred Spaces in New Haven and Its Environs," on view Oct. 1-Nov. 2 at the Institute of Sacred Music.

Issues of spirituality to be explored

The theme of spirituality will be explored in a new exhibition and a poetry reading this week at the Institute of Sacred Music (ISM).

“Sacred Spaces in New Haven and Its Environs,” an exhibition of photographs by Robert A. Lisak, will be on display Oct. 1-Nov. 2. The show features images of 40 houses of worship of diverse faith traditions, which were taken as part of a larger project to produce a full-color guidebook to historically and architecturally important places of worship in New Haven. The book, supported in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, is scheduled for release in fall of 2008.

“I see the idea of constructing a sacred space as a reflection of a communal aspiration to express spirituality and a conception of the holy,” says Lisak. “My hope is that these photographs are a faithful documentation of this communal aspiration as it worked itself out over time and through various faiths. They also represent my individual voice taking part in this communal conversation.”

There will be a reception honoring the exhibition and photographer 4:30-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Great Hall of ISM, 409 Prospect St. The exhibition is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays. Admission is free to both the reception and the exhibition.

“Sacred Spaces in New Haven and Its Environs” is being presented by ISM with support from the Divinity School in conjunction with a conference titled “Sacred Space: Architecture for Worship in the 21st Century,” which is being held Oct. 25-26 at ISM and with the symposium “Constructing the Ineffable” being hosted Oct. 26-27 at the School of Architecture.

Poetry reading

Poet Scott Cairns will present a reading of his work on Thursday, Oct. 4, as part of the Yale Literature and Spirituality Series, offered this season in memory of Lana Schwebel, a former faculty member at ISM and the Divinity School.

Cairns’ reading will take place at 4:15 p.m. in the Yale Divinity Bookstore, 409 Prospect St. It is free and open to the public.

Currently professor of English and director of creative writing at the University of Missouri, Cairns is the author of six collections of poetry, most recently “Compass of Affection: Poems Selected & New.” He co-edited (with W. Scott Olsen) “The Sacred Place,” a collection of prose and verse celebrating the intersections of landscape and ideas of the holy. He wrote the libretto for “The Martyrdom of Saint Polycarp,” an oratorio composed by J.A.C. Redford. His works have been included in “Best Spiritual Writing,” “Best American Spiritual Writing” and “American Religious Poems,” among other anthologies. His spiritual memoir, “Short Trip to the Edge,” and his verse adaptations and translations, “Love’s Immensity: Mystics on the Endless Life,” both were published in 2007.
