Bronislaw Sammler

Sammler is named as McCormick Professor

Bronislaw Sammler, newly designated as the Henry McCormick Professor (Adjunct) of Technical Design and Production, is an award-winning expert on structural design and scenic technology whose techniques are employed in both educational and professional theaters throughout the world.

Sammler has been chair of the Yale School of Drama’s Technical Design and Production Department since 1980. His 1999 book “Structural Design for the Stage” won the United States Institute of Theatre Technology’s (USITT) Golden Pen Award. He is co-editor of “The Technical Brief Collection, Volumes I and II — Twenty Years of Solutions to Recurring Problems in Technical Theatre” and has been editor since 1981 of the Yale School of Drama series “Technical Briefs.”

Sammler founded USITT’s National Theatre Technology Exhibit, an ongoing biennial event. He was honored as the Educator of the Year in 2006 by the New England Theater Conference and also received the New England Theater Conference’s Leonides A. Nickole Award for Excellence in Theatre Education.

Sammler joined the Yale faculty as an assistant professor after earning his M.F.A. from the School of Drama in 1974. He earned his B.S. at the State University of New York at Brockport. At the Yale Repertory Theatre, he has been the production supervisor of over 150 productions and the technical director of more than 50 productions. He has also been engaged in productions in New York City and Washington, D.C.

He is a member of the USITT and has served as the vice-commissioner of that professional organization’s Technical Directing Commission and as its director-at-large, among other activities related to the technical aspects of theatrical production.
