This painting, titled "New Mexico Landscape: Storm," is by Mark Saba, manager of graphics and photography for the ITS Medical Media Group. Saba is one of the Yale affiliates who will be exhibiting in the Alternative Space the weekend of Oct. 27 and 28.

Festival invites public to enjoy
area artists’ creative offerings

Contemporary art — and the artists who create it in all of its myriad forms — will be celebrated during the annual City-wide Open Studios (CWOS), which this year marks its 10th anniversary.

Yale is one of the sponsors of CWOS, a visual arts festival that allows local artists — nearly 500 in all — the opportunity to exhibit their work. Over the course of the 20-day event, the public has the chance to meet area artists by visiting them in their own studios or in one expansive “Alternative Studio” space. Each year, the event draws to New Haven and its surrounding towns thousands of visitors, who explore city neighborhoods on foot or by bicycle, bus or car as they enjoy artistic offerings.

CWOS is hosted by Artspace, a local non-profit organization that seeks to connect artists and audiences and to redefine “art spaces,” among other goals. Many Yale staff, faculty and students have made their own participation in CWOS an annual tradition. (Several Yale-affiliated artists will be featured in the Oct. 12 issue of this newspaper).

CWOS begins on Monday, Oct. 8, when a main exhibition featuring one representative work from each of the participating artists opens in the Artspace gallery at 50 Orange St. This exhibition will be on view daily through Oct. 28. Gallery hours are noon-5 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday, and noon-8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. Admission is free, and the building is handicap accessible.

The public can meet the artists at a opening reception on Friday, Oct. 12, 5-8 p.m. at Artspace. Refreshments will be served.

The first weekend of CWOS, Oct. 13 and 14, will spotlight the more than 100 artists who work in studios in Erector Square, once the site of the Erector Set toy factory. The studio complex, located at 315 Peck St., will be open noon-5 p.m. both days.

Artists represent a range of disciplines, from pottery to painting, graphic design and sculptural installation. Studio maps will be available at the entrances to the building, and guided walking tours will be offered. A free shuttle bus will travel continuously to the complex from Artspace.

During the next weekend, Oct. 20 and 21, individual artists will open their private studios to the public. Artists on the west side of New Haven — including the Hill neighborhood, Westville and West Haven — will be featured on Saturday, noon-5 p.m. A guided bus tour leaves Artspace at 12:30 p.m. and will run for about four hours, with a $5 suggested donation. Free bike tours, leaving Artspace at 12:30 p.m., will also be offered (participants must bring their own bikes, helmets and water).

East-side individual studios (including Audubon Street in downtown and the East Rock, Wooster and Fair Haven neighborhoods) will be open on Sunday of that weekend. Bus and bike tours leave Artspace at 12:30 p.m.

Those wishing to travel independently to these neighborhood studios can find a free map and guide in the Oct. 10 issue of the New Haven Advocate, or by visiting www.artspacenh.org/cwos.

The final weekend of CWOS features some 300 artists whose work will be exhibited in temporary studio spaces, known collectively as the “Alternative Space.” Each year, a vacant city building (often slated for renovation) is chosen as the Alternative Space site. For the second year in a row, the Alternative Space will be at the former Hamden Middle School, located at 550 Newhall St. in Hamden, just over the New Haven line. The Alternative Space will be open for visitors 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 27 and 28. A shuttle will run between Artspace, a designated parking area and the Hamden Middle School. A $5 donation is suggested. Food vendors will be located at the site.

An official guide to CWOS, with a directory of participating artists and a full list of sponsoring organizations, will appear in the Oct. 10 issue of the New Haven Advocate. An online directory of artists and more information about CWOS can also be found at www.artspacenh.org/cwos.
